Spanish

 Intent

At the Holy Spirit, we strive for our children to be aware of the vast cultural and linguistic diversity in today's world and  aim to develop their proficiency in understanding, the four key languange skills: Listening, speaking  reading and writing in Spanish. Every child in KS2 receives weekly Spanish sessions, led by their Class teacher, using the scheme, Language Angels. Using this scheme of work ensures that our pupils receive a vibrant, ambitious  curriculumthat provides solid foundations for the future. A curriculum that addresses our own curriculum drivers and motivates our pupils to develop a love  languages and develop this beyond The Holy Spirit.

The intent is that all content will be continuously updated and reviewed annually, creating a dynamic programme of study that will be clearly outlined in both long-term and short-term planning. This will ensure that the foreign language knowledge of our pupils progresses within each academic year and is extended year upon year throughout the primary phase and, in so doing, will always be relevant and in line with meeting or exceeding national DfE requirements.

The intent is that all pupils will develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating. Learning a second language will also offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, others and cultural differences. The intention is that they will be working towards becoming life-long language learners.

The intent is that all content will be continuously updated and reviewed annually, creating a dynamic programme of study that will be clearly outlined in both long-term and short-term planning. This will ensure that the foreign language knowledge of our pupils progresses within each academic year and is extended year upon year throughout KS2  and, in so doing, will always be relevant and in line with meeting or exceeding national DfE requirements.

Implementation

At The Holy Spirit teachers deliver Spanish across KS2 on a two year cycle. Year 3 and Year 4 study Spanish for 30 minutes a week while Year 5 and Year 6 study Spanish for 45 minutes. All Ks2 will have access to a very high-quality foreign languages curriculum using the Language Angels scheme of work and resources tailored to the needs of pupils. This will progressively develop pupil skills in foreign languages through regularly taught and well-planned weekly lessons in Years 3 to 6 which will be taught by their class teacher

Children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate topics and themes - building blocks of language into more complex, fluent and authentic language .

The planning of different levels of challenges  of early language , intermediate, Progressive and creative units enables our pupils to continuously build their knowledge of and enthusiasm for the language  they are learning. This progressive approach means that the implementation of Spanish is relevant , to pupils and is taught at a level that is appropriate for the learner.

Pupils at The Holy Spirit are encouraged to reflect on their own learning and use knowledge organisers to identify and clarify learning intentions.

In addition to following the lessons provided in the Language Angels scheme of work and resources, teachers are encouraged to celebrate the learning of Spanish throughout the year which includes  some of the following:

  • Foreign language celebration assemblies.
  • Cookery sessions of traditional foods from the country of the language being studied.
  • Fashion shows demonstrating typical / traditional clothing from the country of the language being studied.
  • Weather forecasts based on maps from the country of the language being studied.
  • School celebrations of national feast days from the country of the language being studied when appropriate to facilitate a whole school approach to foreign language learning along with improved cultural awarenessI

Impact

Pupils will continuously build on their previous knowledge as they progress in their foreign language learning journey through the primary phase. Previous language will be recycled, revised, recalled and consolidated whenever possible and appropriate.

The opportunity within Language Angels enables staff to assess pupil learning and progression in the key language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and against the 12 DfE Languages Programme of Study for Key Stage 2 attainment targets is provided at the end of each 6-week teaching unit. This information will be recorded and will be monitored through learning walks, lesson visits, pupil voice and children's work gives a clear picture of progress and attainment.

Through the explicit teaching of the language skills, both the teachers and the pupils assess learning continuously throughout each lesson. children reflect on their knowledge and understanding, within each unit, which enables teachers to make informed judgements about the depth of their learning and the progress they have made over time.
